Practical Training

DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS UNDERGRADUATE PRACTICAL TRAINING

The Department of Statistics, since its establishment in 1989, has implemented the "Internship" as part of its curriculum. It was the first department of the Athens University of Economics and Business to adopt this program many years before other departments.

The Internship at the Athens University of Economics and Business is an institutionalized educational activity of its Study Programs, aimed at the practical application of theoretical scientific knowledge acquired through successful completion of the study program and familiarizing students with potential workplaces.

At the Department of Statistics, the internship is an elective course according to the Department’s Study Guide, with course code 6801, and it grants 6-14 ECTS (credit units), which contribute towards the graduation requirements.

Detailed information about the Program is provided on the website: https://www.aueb.gr/en/internship.

Benefits for Students Participating in the Internship

The benefits for students from participating in the Internship are:

  • Introducing interns to "real" work environment conditions and transitioning from the educational environment to the fields of administration, production, and business.
  • Gaining skills that complement the knowledge foundation of the interns.
  • Familiarizing the interns with the use of technology in management and production.
  • Developing skills related to corporate and public governance, communication, problem-solving in teams, understanding corporate culture, and more.
  • Creating an environment for meeting different fields of knowledge for the implementation of private or public sector projects through cooperation between people from different sectors.
  • Preparing interns for future responsible work positions.
  • Gaining experience regarding the real conditions of the labor market.
  • Forming an opinion regarding the choice of specialties for further graduate-level studies.

Prerequisites - Selection Criteria

The Internship Program is open to students who have completed their 6th semester of studies (3rd year), have earned at least 80 credits, have successfully completed at least 8 mandatory courses up to the previous exam period from their application, and have participated in a relevant informational meeting/workshop by the Internship Office. (The minimum academic requirements are exclusion criteria from the Internship Program selection process).

In cases where available internship positions are fewer than the applications from students, in line with prudent financial management of co-funded actions, and to ensure transparency and equal treatment of applicants, additional evaluation criteria apply for participation, which are common across all departments of the University.

Evaluation Criteria: After checking the minimum academic progress conditions and excluding applications that do not meet them (exclusion criteria), the evaluation process begins. It is based on the following criteria, each of which is rated on a scale of 0 - 100:

  • The average grade (GPA) of the courses the student has successfully passed until the previous exam period from the application. This average is multiplied by 10. This criterion carries a weight of 80%.
  • The total number of credits (ECTS) the student has earned from courses they have successfully completed, compared to the minimum number of credits required for graduation. This criterion carries a weight of 10%.
  • The student’s year of study. For the 3rd or 4th year, the student receives 100 points, and for each year after the 4th, they lose 10 points. This criterion carries a weight of 10%.

In case of a tie at the cutoff for selected candidates, the student with the higher GPA from the previous exam period will be chosen.

In the event of a student’s cancellation of an application for an internship that will receive funding from the European Social Fund (ESF), the funding will be given to the first eligible candidate based on the announced ranking. In case of a late cancellation by a student, if the first eligible candidate has already been assigned through the self-funded program, the next eligible candidate will be selected. If there is no eligible candidate, the funding will be transferred to the next semester.

For students with disabilities (according to a relevant certification from KE.P.A.), Paragraph 12 applies.

Student Applications – Appeals

The call for student applications for internship participation is published on the website of the Internship and Career Office on specific dates for each period, in coordination with the Responsible Institutional Officer. Applications are submitted electronically through the Internship Information System, on specified dates, which are announced on the Internship Office website and the websites of individual departments. The minimum application submission period is ten (10) calendar days.

The evaluation of student applications is carried out by the Internship Committee of the Department (based on the decision of the Department Assembly), and the results (both provisional and final) are announced on the central website of the Internship and Career Office and the Department's website.

Upon posting the provisional results, students have the right to submit a written appeal to the Department’s Secretary within five (5) working days from the posting of the results. Appeals are examined by the Internship Appeals Committee designated by the Department.

After the evaluation of applications, the examination of appeals, and the validation of definite results by the relevant Department Committee, the final ranking list of applicants is announced on the website of the Internship and Career Office, and electronic applications are accepted into the Internship Information System by the Internship and Career Office.

Host Organization Selection

Through the Internship Information System, which is connected to the Ministry of Education's "ATLAS" Central Support System for University Students’ Internships, students selected to participate in the internship program can electronically express their interest in available positions at their desired host organizations.

After interviews, students choose the organization where they will complete their internship and notify the relevant staff member at the Internship and Career Office to arrange formal procedures and paperwork to start the internship.

Each internship position for undergraduate students is published and recorded in the ATLAS information system, as required by applicable legislation.

A student cannot undertake an internship at a host organization where a relative (third degree or closer) works, nor can a relative of the third degree or closer be appointed as a supervisor at the host organization.

Internship Duration

At the Department of Statistics, the employment period is set to three (3) months of full-time employment or six (6) months of part-time employment (full-time corresponds to 40 hours per week and part-time corresponds to 20 hours per week). If the full-time work schedule of the Host Organization differs from the standard 8-hour day, it can be adjusted. The internship may take place during the two academic semesters (Fall and Spring) and the summer period.

The internship duration is compulsorily declared in the ERGANI system by the Host Organization based on the signed Private Internship Agreement. The Host Organization must send the submitted form E3.5 to the Internship and Career Office both at the start and at the end of the student’s internship.
