Publication Alert: Prof. Nikolaos Demiris - The Lancet

Publication Alert: Prof. Nikolaos Demiris (Department of Statistics, Athens University of Economics and Business) co-authored a major international study published in The Lancet, one of the world's leading medical journals.
The study examined the long-term durability of modern total hip replacements by combining evidence from 29 clinical studies and 8 national joint registries, representing more than 1.9 million hip replacements worldwide.
Key findings
Implant survivorship:
- 93.6% at 20 years
- 92.1% at 30 years (predicted)
Why it matters?
The findings show that advances in modern implant technology have dramatically improved the longevity of hip replacements. This evidence will help patients, orthopaedic surgeons, and healthcare systems make better-informed decisions regarding treatment, long-term planning, and medical device evaluation.
This study is an excellent example of how statistical science enables researchers to combine evidence from millions of patients, producing reliable estimates that directly inform clinical practice.
