NEWSLETTER - SPRING 2020

Newsletter of the Department of Economics
Spring 2020

Editorial

Our lives changed abruptly since the beginning of March. The pandemic imposed a new way of life to which our country adapted successfully. The results have been a pleasant surprise not only for us living in Greece but worldwide. The advancement of values such as solidarity, protection of vulnerable groups, as well as personal responsibility signalled the new post-Covid era.

The former governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, wrote in a recent article in The Economist that “…. As our digital and local lives expand and our physical and global ones contract, this sea change will create and destroy value..”.

The Department of Economics adapted immediately to the digital performance of all its functions so that our students did not waste time and opportunities. All lectures after 11 March 2020 took place on-line using new technology tools. Most other functions, such as tutorials, Ph.D. vivas, governing council meetings, elections, administrative support were also performed on-line. The new skills we learnt will help us and our students to manage more efficiently our professional lives in the future and improve our productivity.

After our successful adaptation to the new conditions it is important to remain optimistic, flexible and persistent in order to achieve our goals of high-quality research and teaching that characterize our department and its staff. It is this quality that grants our department the first place among all other departments of economics in Greece in many international rankings (e.g. ideas.repec.org).

Jean Monnet Seminar Series

George D. Demopoulos, Professor of Economics, Emeritus and European Chair Jean Monnet organizes at the Athens University of Economics and Business the very successful Jean Monnet Seminar Series for the last 23 academic years  (Spring semester) in the context of the activities of the European chair.  The Seminar has the following subject: “European Economic Integration and Public Policy”.

It is a weekly seminar, of 2 ½ hours duration, which takes place each Wednesday 19:00 - 21:00 (in the Amphitheatre Derigny) and in a weekly base welcomes an average number of 200 undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Department of Economic Science, of the Department of International and European Economic Studies of the Athens University of Economics and Business and of other Departments of Universities of the city of Athens and Pireaus.

The Seminar deals with current problems of the Greek, European and International economy, and with issues involving the operation of the EU Institutions and their prospects.

Many Professors of Greek Universities along with many distinguished executives of financial Institutions and executives of the European Committee (when they are found in Athens) are invited to give their lectures in the Seminar series in subjects that are mentioned before . A small introduction of the subject is given by Professor George Demopoulos who hosts the Seminar. In the end of the lecture of every invited speaker, the audience addresses the speaker with several questions on the relevant subject.

The students who participate in the 80% of the lectures of the Seminar Series, receive certification of their participation after the completion of the Series. The Seminar constitutes henceforth one important forum (in which Professors and researchers can present (in a simplified form) part of their research.

The weekly announcement of the Seminar is being sent out to Professors of similar Departments of our Universities, in scientific centers, and financial Institutions.

It must be noted that an Annual Report on the activities of the European Chair Jean Monnet (no. 97/0243) that Professor Emeritus George D. Demopoulos holds is submitted to the Directorate General for Education and Culture, European Commission, undersigned by the Rector of our University.

The program (in greek) of the academic year 2019-20 is available here.
