The Teacher Education Program of Athens University of Economics and Business started its operation in the 2011-2012 academic year, over the Chancellor Prof. Konstantinos Gatsios’ service, with the decision of the 5th Session of the Senate on 25th February 2011, and over the Chancellor Prof. Grigorios Prastakos’ service it acceded administratively to the Department of Administrative Science and Technology, under the Presidency of Prof. George Ioannou, and it was offered horizontally to all Departments of AUEB.
The Curriculum of the Teacher Education Program was designed selflessly in October 2010 by Dr. Vasiliki Brinia, in accordance with Law 3848/2010, and with innovations based on the philosophy and best practices of the Teacher Education Program of Harvard School of Education and the Teacher Education Program of Stanford School of Education. It was approved for its content at the 5th Session of the Senate on 25th February 2011 by the Chancellor Prof. Grigorios Prastakos. Dr. Vasiliki Brinia, through the decision of the Chancellor Council's 14th Session on 2nd June 2011, over Chancellor Prof. Grigorios Prastakos’ service, was appointed as Scientific Coordinator and Coordinator of the Teacher Education Program from the first academic year of its operation, 2011 -2012.
The Scientific Committee -required by the Ministry of Education- for the monitoring of the good operation of the Program during the first two years of its operation, over the Chancellor Prof. Konstantinos Gatsios’ service, was composed by Prof. Konstantinos Gatsios and members of the faculty of pedagogical science from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Konstantinos Chrysafidis, President of the Department of Education and Education in Preschool, Professor Athanasios Trilianos, President in the Department of Primary Education, and Ioannis Vrettos, Professor of Pedagogical Science in the Department of Primary Education. For the Academic Years 2013-2014 and 2014-2015, over Chancellor Prof. Konstantinos Gatsios’ service, Professor of Informatics Dimitrios Gritzalis was appointed as head of the Monitoring Committee for the Teacher Education Program, when he left office in 2015 to take the position of the Deputy Chancellor of Research of AUEB and the administrative responsibility was transferred to the Department of Informatics with Dr. Vasiliki Brinia, lecturer in the Department of Informatics, as a Scientific Head.
The Teacher Education Program of AUEB is the first of its kind at the level of the Higher Education Institutions and was evaluated and certified by the Institute of Educational Policy through the decision 39460 / C2 / 21-3-2013 by the Minister of Education, Government Gazette B '689 / 26-3-13, over the Chancellor Prof. Konstantinos Gatsios’ service.
Since the academic year 2014-2015, over the Chancellor Prof. Konstantinos Gatsios’ service and Professor Theodoros Apostolopoulos’ Presidency, the Dean of the School of Science and Information Technology, Professor Panagiotis Konstantopoulos, the Teacher Education Program is offered administratively by the Department of Informatics to the other departments of AUEB.
The Teacher Education Program, since 2015 and onwards, over Chancellor Prof. Emmanouil Yakoumakis’ service, Prof. Panagiotis Konstantopoulos' service and Prof. George Stamoulis' service, as Deans of the School of Science and Information Technology and over Prof. Theodoros Apostolopoulos', Prof. George Stamoulis' and Prof. Nikolaos Malevris’ Presidencies in the Department of Informatics, with Dr Vasiliki Brinia's collaboration, and having as strategic goals excellence, extroversion and innovation, has collaboration with Oslo University (Department of Teacher Education and School Research) in Norway, with the University of Stockholm (Department of Humanities and Social Science Education) in Sweden, with Aalto University (School of Arts, Department of Art) in Helsinki, Finland, with Gavle University (Department of Teacher Education) in Sweden, with the University of Heidelberg (Institute of Education Studies) in Germany and with the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) as well as the NGO DIAZOMA.
Today, and after several changes in the relevant legislation in recent years, the Teacher Education Program of AUEB remains the only undergraduate program for the education of prospective teachers at the level of Higher Education Institutions, which is recognized by the Ministry of Education with the Government Gazette B '689 / 26-3-13.
The Teacher Education Program is offered without tuition fees to undergraduate students of the eight Departments of AUEB and leads to the acquisition of the Certificate of Pedagogical and Teaching Competence, according to Law 3848/2010, providing holders with the professional rights of teaching the subject of their expertise in Primary and Secondary Education.
