Prof. Phoebe Koundouri, President of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE), has been appointed as the Chair of the esteemed World Council of Environmental and Resource Economists Associations (WCEREA).
WCEREA serves as a coordinating organization, comprised of the following esteemed members: the Asian Association of Environmental and Resource Economics (AAERE), the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE), the African Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AFAERE), and the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE). Additionally, the Latin American Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (LAERE) actively participates as a partner, while other associations have the opportunity to join as members or partners in the future.
As a global platform, WCEREA facilitates joint activities among member associations and fosters fruitful cooperation among environmental economists worldwide. One of its key responsibilities is to coordinate the organization of the prestigious World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists (WCERE), which has been held every four years since 1998. EAERE’s Annual Conference has been integrated into the World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists since its inception, signifying an essential international event jointly organized with AERE. From 2018 onwards, the event is co-organized by AERE, EAAERE, and EAERE.
An aspect of WCEREA’s structure is the appointment of the President of the Board. The President hails from a different association for each term and, during their tenure, the appointing association provides secretariat services to WCEREA.
The WCEREA plays a vital role in advancing environmental and resource economics and upholding the principles of sustainability and responsible stewardship of our planet’s resources. Prof. Phoebe Koundouri’s leadership as the Chair will steer WCEREA toward even greater achievements and collaborations within the global environmental economics community and will focus on building a world task force to develop a special report on the socio-economic narrative of the transition to climate neutrality and climate resilience: we now have the science, the technology, the political will, we need the science-driven detail on who will finance the transition and how non one will be left behind!
