Event Description:
Under the auspices of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy of Greece, the Goulandris Natural History Museum, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network Global Climate Hub, and the Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aeiphoria (AE4RIA) are jointly organizing a workshop to explore pathways to accelerate the Greek Shipping Sector. Titled “Net-Zero and Climate-Resilient Shipping: Can Greece Lead the Race?” the event will take place on Friday, May 31st, 2024, from 18:00 to 20:30 EEST in Athens, Greece, at the Goulandris Natural History Museum.
Concept note:
The goal of this event is to accelerate the transformation of the Greek Shipping Sector by working with the community of stakeholders to develop ground-breaking innovation with positive economic, social and environmental impacts, while also promoting the contribution of the wider sector to the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Workshop intends to establish a roundtable of stakeholders in the Shipping and Ports Industry including Shipping companies (passenger, cargo), Port Authorities, Project Machinery Operators, Employee unions, Terminal Providers, Academia, and Research Centres. Through a structured Workshop, the stakeholders will work on co-identifying the major challenges (economic, technological, political, social, and financial) and engage them towards co-creating the vision and the pathways towards the decarbonization of the sector.
Taking into account the current global landscape, emerging trends, and upcoming legislative requirements regarding sustainability, there is a unique opportunity for the Shipping Sector to reduce climate change-related risks and enhance the positive social impact of their operations: the potential to adopt a systems innovation approach that goes beyond compliance to redesign shipping into a sector capable of transforming their wider value chains and geographical areas, supporting and enabling the innovation.
