Vision and Perspective

The Management Science Laboratory (MSL) was created in January 2000 by the Senate of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB). MSL is now a leading ISO-certified research center in Europe, conducting research and advisory work in the areas of quantitative analysis, modeling and optimization methods, operations and supply chain management, transportation and logistics, financial engineering, business transformation and strategy, innovation and knowledge management, entrepreneurship, and human resources management. Recently, responding to upcoming external needs and leveraging on its interdisciplinary background, MSL has introduced a new Research Center that focuses on the workings of the health sector value chain, and how the sector impacts economic and social activity.

MSL' s mission is to produce world-class research output, and to advance research and outreach efforts for management improvement in today's technological, dynamically evolving, and strongly interconnected global business environment. MSL' s main goals can be summarized in the following:

  • Advance the state-of-the art in management science research, by exploring issues from a multi-dimensional perspective that includes global changes, information technology and innovation developments, and business model changes.
  • Maintain a corporate development and technology transfer knowledgebase, that enables companies and organizations that operate in evolving environments to tap into a unique reservoir of expertise in management.
  • Promote the research interaction of AUEB faculty, researchers and students with world-renowned institutions, scholars, industry experts, and businesses that results to an advisory capacity that can address realistic real-world problems.
  • Support the educational mission of AUEB' s Department of Management Science & Technology, by infusing its research results, conceptual frameworks, methodologies, and tools into the classroom.

Since its foundation, MSL researchers have successfully completed numerous research projects, have developed conceptual frameworks and methodologies, have organized international conferences and specialized workshops, and have published numerous papers in academic journals, specialized reports, books, edited volumes.

Other than its core team of over 30 researchers (many of them being graduate and doctoral students), MSL also has a strong and diverse network of experts around the world, from which it can draw expertise, when necessary. This means that the specialized - vertical research activities, as well as its expanding sectoral - horizontal research and advisory involvement, is typically carried out by multi-disciplinary teams of researchers and other experts, with an appropriate mix of scientific skills and sectoral knowledge, assuring optimal outcomes that are always relevant to the managerial challenges.

Today, MSL’s researchers are working on many projects that are funded from the corporate sector, the European Union, and National Funding Agencies. We use state of the art facilities that are equipped with modern technological infrastructure, including decision technology software and ERP systems.
