The team representing Athens University of Economics and Business at the 26th Edition of the Econometric Game at the University of Amsterdam advanced to the Top 10 Finalists
Our very own Ilias Stavrianopoulos (PhD candidate in Economics, MSc in Business Economics and Finance – Series 2023-2024), George Malanos (PhD candidate in Economics, Applied Economics and Finance– Series 2021-2022) and teammates Lampis Tzai (PhD candidate in Statistics, AUEB & University of Lausanne) and Ioannis Stylidis (MSc in Statistics, AUEB) tackled a real-world challenge:
Forecasting and classifying grid congestion events in Germany and proposing targeted, data-driven energy policy solutions.
Their approach?
- Machine Learning (XGBoost)
- Custom-developed variant of a minority oversampling technique
- Policy recommendations based on counterfactual analysis and partial dependency plots
They stood out among 31 top-tier universities including Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, NUS, SNU, Sciences Po, UVA, Carlos III, Erasmus, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Maastricht and more!
